Notes on the Vulcan Quarry in Atlanta:
This is the quarry that Bob Johnson told us about that was
donated to (as Bob told us) / bought by (as the news article says) to turn into a park.
I’m still looking for some plans or renderings of what this
park will look like.
4 miles northwest of the heart of downtown
Will be Atlanta’s largest park
Plans to be turned into a water reservoir but estimates don’t
expect the reservoir to be filled until 2040. This is definitely something to
think about when talking about letting water level rise in defunct quarries.
The city then plans to bore a 8,000-foot tunnel from the
quarry to the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant on 17th Street.
Jacob said the process could take several years to complete,
depending on funding.
This reservoir will provide the city with a 30 day water
supply. The news source below states it would take several months for the reservoir to fill up while this other source (maybe not as reliable) says that there are estimates that the reservoir would not fill up until 2040. There is clearly some disagreement over how quickly an abandoned quarry would fill up with water.
A 300 acre park will be formed all around the reservoir that
will be 300 feet deep.
Because the reservoir could potentially be used as a water
supply for the city, it must be secured. It would be used as a visual amenity to the
park.
