Columbia field trip notes

John Fellows :
-       Columbia city planner
-       Pedestrian and bicycle master plan development

Richard Giles :
-       owner of 701 Waley
-       connections, influences – very important
-       History of building and community
o   Mill Store 1903
o   1907-8 turned into community center
§  family and together time in a closed environment
o   1918 – Pool added. 1925 became the “Y”
o   Olympia community was economically self contained as a commercial untity
o   Richard’s goal : maintain public space with intensive space
§  Loft, live/work, studio

Bob Guilds
-       Interested in self sustaining community revitalization
-       Human relationships are important
o   Drive progress/retreat
-       Mill community is well connected socially
-       Mills sat vacant for awhile
o   Civil, social etc activities within walking distance
-       Properties were neglected, and are not trying to be revitalized.
-       Historical fabric is super important to the community
-       Access road to quarry used to go through neighborhood and create a lot of pollution. Moved to an access road along the river.

Quarry Tour – Bob Johnson
            Quarry used to be used for dimensional stone.  Stopped due to color inconsistency.
            Originally owned by Palmetto
            Largest Vulcan Quarry
            Quarry is on fall line; where granite stops and limestone, sandstone begins
           
            Reclamation plan : let water rise to a certain level?
                        -houses, with lake inlet from river?
                        - golf course?
                        - water run off goes right to quarry
                        - rocky branch acts as a giant storm drain
                                    -how to clean up rocky branch?
Process :
-       strip dirt.  Either kept, discarded, or sold
-       drilling and blasting
o   done in steps
o   blasting done with emulsion.  Dynamite is an old process
-       loading and hauling
o   sent to crushing station
o   jaw crusher
o   jaretory
o   1,000 tons an hour
-       sent to secondary crusher
o   cone crusher
o   sent to screener
-       tertiary crusher when necessary
-       Piles over tunnels. Size ranges from 2” to sand
-       Stone is washed and cleaned and loaded into bins – trucks go in and out super quick.  25 ton trucks loaded in a minute or two.
Wash Plant
-       rock is put on screen to spray off.
-       Water is processed to be cleaned up
o   Water is “flocked” process of adding chemical to cause silt to sink to bottom of water
